Using technology for adolescent research
Ybarra, Michele. (2008, June). Using Technology for Adolescent Research. Presented at the CDC Adolescents and Technology Panel, Atlanta, GA.
Summary:
This presentation discusses reasons for using techonology in adolescent research. A case study is provided using the Growing up With Media survey to illustrate that using computer-based technologies to conduct the study allowed us to achieve our goals of a nationally representative data, a longitudinal survey, a complex survey with lots of skips, and the ability to ask youth sensitive questions (i.e. violent behavior, substance use).
Findings include:
- All methodologies have limitations and biases.
- You need to be very clear about what your goals are, and what methodology will minimize your bias while maximizing your goals the best.
