Issues of language and frequency in measurement of cyberbullying: Data from the Growing up with Media survey

Ybarra, Michele (2009, August). Issues of language and frequency in measuring cyberbullying: Data from the Growing up with Media survey. Presented at the COST ACTION IS0801, Vilnius, Lithuania.

Summary:

This presentations discusses issues with cyberbullying measurement, specifically:

1. Should we use a definition, or a list of behavioral items

2. How does the timeframe affect prevalence rates? Response options for frequency?

3. Data source sampling method

Results were based on a literature review of cyberbully articles published as of July 2009.

Findings include:

- A lot of variation in cyberbullying measurement was found across studies

- Behavior-based list of experiences yields a higher prevalence rate than a definition-based measure
